In the past several years, the application of enzymes and bacteria as supplement in feeds has been widened dramatically. The research was mostly carried out at universities and research institutions with funds in large part by the biotechnology industry, in cooperation with government agencies. Over the years, a better understanding of the ways and methods of bacteria and enzymes to produce their beneficial activity and their interactions with otherANIMAL FEED INDUSTRIES dietary processes have helped biotechnology develop better animal feed additives and supplements. Probiotic bacteria and enzymes improve animal performance and have many other beneficial effects, including higher resistance to diseases and minimized pollution of the environment by reducing the output of excreta and pollutants, like phosphate, nitrogen and ammonia. Feed bacteria and enzymes have important roles in current livestock farming systems. They affect the availability of nutrients and may in turn affect the health status of the animal. Highly resilient types can create a protective barrier around each cell and support healthy intestinal flora in livestock. These cellular barriers survive a variety of adverse digestive conditions including a wide pH range. Although progress has been made on the use of bacteria and enzymes in the diets of poultry and livestock, additional research will be needed in many areas to exploit the full potential of this very powerful and beneficial biotechnology. The good news of course is the livestock production need not wait but can reap the benefits today from the developments in the past.
